Neuromuscular dentistry is utterly different from traditional dentistry primarily in the aspect that such dentistry deals with the nerves and muscles and the proper positioning of the jaw. On the other hand, only teeth and joints are observed in traditional dentistry.

Such dentistry gains its importance because it is extremely helpful in painful conditions like temporomandibular joint disorders. In a way, it can endow a person with more relaxed and long term solutions to some other factors like dentures and smile makeovers.

This is important to note that in the exact position and functioning of the jaw, your teeth, joints, muscles, and nerves act in a combined manner. A slight disorder and lack of care in any of these parts can create TMJ and painful dental problems. To resolve the issue of the exact positioning of the jaw, neuromuscular dentistry deals in modern technology.

• Electromyography

It calculates electrical doings in the jaw muscles and jaw to skull relationship. It is helpful at the time of muscle tension i.e. while jaw is in motion.

• Computerized Mandibular Scan

It points out movements of the jaw and the location of the jaw at peace.

• Sonography

This helps in catching moving sounds of the jaw. Misalignment is often indicated by sounds like clicks, pops, scraping, and grinding.

TMJ/TMD

Treating TMJ/TMD is probably the most important and revolutionary aspect of neuromuscular dentistry. Some painful and intolerable symptoms don’t look like dental problems at times but they appear as the consequence of a misaligned jaw. The symptoms of TMJ/TMD are as follows:

• Headaches (sometimes misunderstood as migraines)

Pain in shoulder or neck

Lack of sensation in arms and fingers

Facial pain

Jaw pain

Clicking or popping jaw

Clenching or grinding teeth

Ringing ears (tinnitus)

jammed ears

In such cases, a neuromuscular dentist employs transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation, which is like a massage and comforts the muscles. It also stops spasms and reduces pain.

Smile Makeover

This aspect encompasses everything related to your smile, even teeth and gums. Proper jaw alignment is also its concern. One shouldn’t just have dental benefits, but also cosmetic benefits from a smile makeover and neuromuscular dentistry assures this. Proper functioning of teeth and jaws together give relaxed muscles and this exerts a positive impact on your appearance. But, one has to remember that a misaligned bite is often harmful and gives chipped and broken teeth rapidly losing the results of a smile makeover. This compels one to have painful and costly dental work.

Dentures

Traditional dentistry’s dependence on impressions for making dentures often produces imperfections and it is unable to create accurate bite alignment. Neuromuscular dentistry makes you free of problems (especially in chewing and speaking) after dentures and with this, the lasting period of dentures is longer.

Compared to traditional dentistry, neuromuscular dentistry is a superior way to treat dental problems. TMJ/TMD treatment reduces your pain. Outcomes are perfect and of long term n general dentistry, whereas, cosmetic dentistry endows one with an improved look.
